History

The press history of Gothenburg is very much that of Göteborgs Handels- och Sjöfartstidning, often referred to simply as Handelstidningen - the "Trade paper" for short. GHT was founded by accountant Magnus Prytz and the first issue was published on April 9th, 1832. On May 1st, 1851, Prytz formed a stock company for the paper along with C. J. Lindskog and J. M. Winnerstedt - the Handelstidningens Aktiebolag. Since then, a number of editors-in-chief have made their mark on the GHT, and contributed to many of the contemporary issues in society over the years. A few of these men are; Sven Adolf Hedlund, editor-in-chief and joint owner of the newspaper from 1852 until his death in 1900. He was succeeded by his nephew, Hans Hedlund who held the position until 1917. Torgny Segerstedt followed him in turn from 1917, and served as the editor-in-chief until his death in 1945. Knut Petersson was the editor-in-chief and legally responsible publisher of the GHT in 19451957. From the 1930s onwards, the Göteborgs-Posten would gradually claim the position as the city's main newspaper.

The collections of the University Library also include the extensive archives of several of the editors-in-chief of the GHT, such as the selection above, which is linked to the respective personal archives in the Alvin database.
