Grupp 8 Göteborg

Grupp 8 is said to be the women's organisation that had the most impact in Sweden. The association was founded by eight women in 1968, and grew swiftly from there. It was engaged in many different issues - the right to work, equal pay, six-hour workdays for everyone, childcare for all children, free abortions, and campaigns against pornography.

About the archive

The Gothenburg section of Grupp 8 (Grupp 8 Göteborg) is held by KvinnSam and consists mainly of documentation from meetings as well as bulletins, but also includes correspondence and posters. The archive covers the years 1970–1981 and amounts to 12 volumes.

The documents are sorted in specific categories to enable browsing of the material. It was acquired as a series of additional accessions, which have been kept, to some extent, in the order in which they arrived. Two of the group members have donated documents of their own: Ingrid Telléus (Johansson) and Harriet Otterloo. For this reason, these two women are more frequently represented in the archive compared to other members.

The most visible issues in the archive are child care, women's employment conditions, pornography, the sexual assault inquiry of 1976, and a number of drives concerning the Vietnam War, the Franco Regime and decolonisation.

History

Grupp 8 Göteborg formed in 1971–1972 from the work prompted by the discontent of a small group of women due to the inequality in the workplace and in the home. The purpose of the association was action - they defined their organisation as a movement rather than a political party. The organisation had a non-hierarchical structure with independent groups.

Grupp 8 Göteborg worked consistently with questions regarding practise and cooperation, how the organisation should relate to other women's organisations, and to the political left. The Gothenburg 8:s participated regularly in international women's conferences, the national conferences of Grupp 8, as well as conferences for all Socialist women's groups in Sweden.

The Grupp 8 magazine, Kvinnobulletinen became a core channel in communicating the stances of the association. The magazine mixed classic reports and articles on women's issues with book reviews and feminist comics.
